Mount Artxanda and the Bilbao Funicular is a must-do. Offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscapes. This semi-challenging adventure is accessible from the city center and offers a satisfying experience for hikers of all levels.

Getting There

To reach the Mount Artxanda trailhead, it is easily accessible from the city center. It is roughly a 15 min walk from Plaza Moyua. 

Alternatively, you can take a bus or drive up to the parking lot near the summit. If you are heading there by Metro then you want to get off at Matiko Station. Matiko Station is on Metro Bilbao’s Line 3.

Mount Artxanda Elevation

The Famous Bilbao Funicular – Artxanda Funicular

The Artxanda Funicular is a popular way to reach the summit of Mount Artxanda, located in Bilbao, Spain. The funicular has been in operation since 1915 and offers visitors an easy and convenient way to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of the mountain.

This Bilbao Funicular operates every day of the year, starting early in the morning and continuing until late at night. The journey to the top takes only three minutes, and the cabins are designed to provide a smooth and comfortable ride.

The Atxanda Funicular is dog friendly, you just need to keep your furry friend on a leash.

The cost is less €2.50 one way or €4.30 round trip. Kids under the age of six are free.

Though, if you want to save some money and are going to be using the metro system, get a Barik. The cost is €3.00 and you only need one for the whole family. It is rechargeable. The minimum recharge is €5.00.  

The cost of a family of four to do a round trip using Barik is less than the cost of one person doing a round trip.

Mount Artxanda Trail

The Mount Artxanda Trail, a popular choice for hikers of all skill levels, features clear and well-marked paths that are easily accessible. The trail spans a total distance of approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) and offers diverse terrain, including rocky paths and well-trodden dirt trails.

Although the hike is relatively short, it still provides a good workout, with some steep sections that require sturdy footwear and plenty of water. Additionally, as the trail is exposded in certain areas, it’s recommended to wear sunscreen and a hat on sunny days.

As you make your way up the mountain, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the city of Bilbao, the nearby mountains, and the distant coastline. The ascent is not particularly challenging, but it’s sure to leave you feeling invigorated and inspired.

Mount Artxanda Summit

La Escuela is a little bit of a walk up the street from the summit but is well worth your time. As you may have guessed by the name it is a fine dining culinary school. They offer a wide arrange of options while providing seating with an incredible valley view.

Artxanda Urban Trail Race

The Artxanda Urban Trail Race is an annual event that takes place on Mount Artxanda. If you are an avid runner this is for you. There are several different races that you may participate in.

Choose either the short race and a long race option depending on how much you want to push yourself. There is also an option to complete in running up the funicular track. 

The Ascension Funicular, takes place at night after they shut down funicular operations for the night. This short race is one of the most unique racing experiences you can have in Basque Country.
